About a year ago I had the brilliant idea to use an old plastic tote to create a composting worm bin. I took an old plastic tote and drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom and started filling it up with kitchen (veg) scraps. We looked around for some composting worms and found a container of them at the local sports shop and threw them in. I’ve made a worm bin before. That one was out of plywood and it worked wonderfully, until the plywood rotted into the ground after about 5 yrs. Large colonies of red wigglers are now roaming free somewhere in Kirkland, WA.
What I didn’t count on was the extreme temperatures of Southern Idaho, I think my worm’s geese were cooked in the first few days of summer. Also, the drainage holes clogged up making for a very fowl stew. So I decided to dump it out on garden bed 2. The stench was so rank it was like sticking a blow torch up my nostrils.
